Bypass Company Firewall with JoikuSpot

This morning I found out my company has blocked remote access via TeamViewer. What a bummer! I loss the ability to remote control my HTPC to download stuff from rapidshare, megaupload and so on. I tried LogMeIn via O2 free GPRS. I find it is not very friendly when comes to key input as the text is out of sight, and impossible to put a complete url.

Luckily, my new addition to my powerful N95 save the day. With JoikuSpot, my phone is now a wifi access point, by sharing the free O2 GPRS data allocates to my mobile. What a good idea that is. I have no problem using TeamViewer now as I can surf via Joiku to bypass the company proxy server :)

Online Remote Control: LogMeIn vs TeamViewer 4

I've been using TeamViewer 3 for remote desktop control for several months, and it is the only way to control my HTPC in office since OpenVPN, OpenSSH, LogMeIn etc all blocked. Recently TeamViewer release version 4, where you can remote control over web browser. I'd tested yesterday, and I like the fact I still have all the functions as I control via desktop version. But I don' like the display resolution of my HTPC as I couldn't zoom in/out the desktop. To counter that, you can enable auto panning when mouse over the edge of the remote screen.

LogMeIn has been well known for remote control over web browser long before TeamViewer. I like the auto fit remote desktop resolution feature that is missing in TeamViewer. Since it is a free account, I'm unable to remote transfer files as in TeamViewer (althought TV is free).

Browsing from my N95, LogMeIn works perfectly over the internet. I can control the display zoom by setting my prefer %. It is not working from mobile when browsing TeamViewer web login page. When I'm at home, I use VNC+ instead.

This is a brief comparison between TeamViewer 4 and LogMeIn. I've both installed in my HTPC to benefit from both product.

Netgear DG834N touch down

I got my DG834N eventually as I discovered the 2nd floor bedrooms are getting bad wifi coverage with the DG834G router. I'd patched the firmware with DGTeam and it works fine.

Getting a draft N router, it is part of my wishlist to upgrade my home networking for better coverage and future proof. As I might get a Slingbox SOLO and a Mini 1000 netbook from HP next year, the router will serve me well when slinging the Sky+ box (or Freesat) over wifi to my netbook. Just a thought.

Patched my Netgear DG834Gv3 with DGTeam firmware

A few days back, I posted a new release of DGTeam custom firmware for Netgear. Since then I'd been trying to get dgteam's firmware to work but without success until a revised firmware 0849 released early today. Internet and wifi connection are fixed in this minor release.I've tested the WOL function and it works as expected. Cheers for that! Hence I can turn off my HTPC and wake up in office whenever I need to download stuffs :)

Just 2 days ago DGTeam released firmware for DG834Gv4, it is now available for v1-v3! The WOL function I wanted for so long can finally be materialize without buying a new router. This release saved me ££ as I was so close from winning a DG834N bid at eBay yesterday, and I'm thankful I didn't win it.

DGTeam firmware for Netgear DG834Gv4

I have been searching for Wake-on-LAN solution for months for my Netgear router as I like to shutdown my HTPC and wake it over the internet, but none has been working. Until recently I found out DGTeam has released an updated firmware for DG834XX series early this month, and was eagerly waiting for DG834G turn. Finally after days of browsing, I noticed it is out now.

As I'm using Sky's converted Netgear router and it is DG834v3 equivalent, this means either I try to upgrade the firmware and perform recovery if it failed or buy an used DG834v4 from eBay.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II, G10 and SX 10 IS

This morning I got shocked by Canon new announcement, the 5D Mark II apparently beat my expectation. It comes with 21MP CMOS sensor, an expanded ISO range of 50-25,600 and a wealth of improvements and new features including full 1080p HD movie recording, live view, 3.0" 920k dot LCD, DIGIC IV processor, increased battery capacity and sensor dust reduction, for US: $ 2,699.

While the consumer range share the joy with G10's spec and design. It comes with wide angle (28mm) and a comfortable grip. SX10 IS offers 20x zoom lenses, DIGIC IV processors, improved image stabilization system and wealth of new features. The SX1 IS is particularly interesting as it is the first PowerShot to feature a Canon CMOS sensor, which allows the camera to offer 4.0 fps (full resolution) continuous shooting and true 1080p HDTV movie capture at 30fps.

I like G10 in particular as it comes with dedicated control for ISO and exposure.

Micro Four Third Camera from Panasonic

Today Panasonic makes the headline. Not long ago Panasonic and Olympus signed into Micro Four Thirds standard - and the Panasonic G1 - represents the first complete break with legacy SLR technology going back well over half a century, and as such represents an important moment in digital photography's short history.

Panasonic's stated reasons for introducing Micro Four Thirds are simple; to produce smaller cameras that act more like compact DSCs whilst offering the quality and versatility of a DLSR - and in doing so to convert some of the millions of compact camera buyers who - according to research - are put off digital SLRs by the bulk, complexity and lack of user-friendliness.

Compare the size of micro four standard G1 in the middle with a prosumer on the left and standard dslr on the right.

In my opinion, Panasonic G1 and Nikon D90 will be the popular upgrade path for compact camera consumer as G1 has the comfortable size and weight (aprox 380g w/o batt) while D90 (aprox 620g w/o batt) has the movie recording function. It will be interesting to know what Olympus will announce in the coming weeks as Photokina 2008 is coming close. I do felt Pentax and Samsung have left out from the race as they have yet to find a way to come back into the game.

My Home Networking Setup Part 2

After several weeks of hit and misses, finally I come to enable home PC remote desktop in office. :) There is no way I can remote access from my office using RDP, VPN, OPENVPN or OPENSSH as my company firewall is too strict. Initially I was trying Timbuktu but it doesn't support Vista at the moment, and web based LogMeIn has been blocked by the company proxy. Luckily I found a free collaboration software called TeamViewer while surfing in Skype forum.

For this, all I need to do is install it and get the ID and Password on the host PC I want to access and once I entered the details, then TeamViewer will establish a secure connection to the host. Simple and easy. It eliminates the effort to setup RDP, VPN, OPENVPN, OPENSSH or DDNS.

The only problem with this is getting the password if you intend to leave your home for long. But my workaround is to setup a screen grab at an interval using SnagIt then save it as picture and put it in a ftp server. All I need to do is access my ftp server and check the picture for password.

I just found out a static password is possible from the options dialog. Now it is getting simplier.

I can confirm the ID remain static, but to make sure the Connection ID doesn't change will not at home, the best way is to grab the ID in TeamViewer log file at C:\Documents and Settings\[YOURNAME]\Application Data\TeamViewer\TeamViewer3_Logfile.log

And the best place to put the log file is in the ftp server where it is easily accessible.

Internet Radio with Orban Flash Player

I wanna recommend a nice flash based music channel. If your company blocked all internet radio from shoutcast, you can try orban player and the music is not bad. It is a flash based internet radio so it won't be blocked unless your company's firewall does not allow web browsing.
